Responding to the Notification Decision Part Two ? Denied by Dr. Don Martin

Image
As promised last week, here are some tips for what to do if you are denied:   Denied – This is never easy. After all of the time and work you have put in to your   application, it can feel like a real slap in the face.  If you are extremely upset, do not react by phone or in writing right away.  Give it a few days.  As you reflect, consider the following:   Being deined is never easy.  After all of the time and work you have put in to your application, it can feel like a real slap in the face.  If you are extremely upset, do not react by phone or in writing right away.  Give it a few days.  As you reflect, consider the following:   Accept the decision. At this point you cannot change it. Don’t take it personally. Remember, under most circumstances the admissions committee is faced with a very difficult task:  choosing a limited enrollment number from among a very large applicant pool.  These individuals are good people, who are doing their best in a very difficult situation.

Serial Killer Bio in Kindle & Nook for 99 Cents Thru March, Solves Two Bill Bonin Homicides, Tracks Personal Evolution

Image
Los Angeles, CA— A major historical biography about serial killer Bill Bonin, aka The Freeway Killer, is now on sale in Kindle and Nook formats for 99 Cents thru March 31. A recent batch of 5-Star reviews for Without Redemption: Creation & Deeds of Freeway Killer Bill Bonin, His Five Accomplices & How One Who Escaped Justice, written by Clinical Psychologist Vonda Pelto, Ph.D. and Michael B. Butler, highlight the many aspects of a book that tracks how Bonin evolved from abused child to sexual predator and thence unfeeling serial killer.   The authors were able to uncover how and why one of Bonin's accomplices, Eric Wijnaendts, got away with double-murder and how and why one day, March 24, 1980, during the ten-month murder spree altered events dramatically months after Bonin's final arrest. The first review below, written by someone with 30-years in the film business, indicates that the book is compelling and detailed enough for a solid movie production. Able to dr

Alan Weiss?s Monday Morning Memo? ? 2/27/2023

Image
For Immediate Release: Dateline: East Greenwich , RI Monday, February 27, 2023   Overall, 2,500 newspapers in the United States—a quarter of them—have closed since 2005 (Wikipedia). Over 360 closed since just before the start of the pandemic,  but that was also the pace prior to the pandemic . If auto advertising were to suddenly disappear or seriously attenuate, most of the rest would probably vanish. Our local daily, the Providence Journal, is very thin, was taken over by one of the huge holding companies (New Media Investment Group), and runs two full pages of huge obituaries because they charge $200-$400 apiece for them! There is scant investigative reporting, and a lot of wire service reprints. Local dailies and weeklies have provided readers with the pragmatic news for their lives, the stuff that’s not blaring on TV nor distorted on the internet: school board meetings, visiting entertainment, Eagle Scouts, library events, local police reports, road closings, local spo

And Now the News

For Immediate Release: Dateline: East Greenwich , RI Overall, 2,500 newspapers in the United States — a quarter of them — have closed since 2005. (Wikipedia). Over 360 closed since just before the start of the pandemic,  but that was also the pace prior to the pandemic. It’s not ChatGPT or AI or UFOs we need to be worrying about, it’s the disappearance of the newspapers keeping us abreast of community activities, tax issues, Eagle Scouts, board of education decisions, and visiting arts groups. These newspapers have either been gobbled up by the big chains (e.g., Gannett) or have simply folded because of dropping ad revenues and competition from the internet. (If auto advertising disappeared tomorrow, probably 90% of the remaining newspapers would disappear). Newspapers have never been run well, sweeping dumb management under the carpet of the First Amendment as justification for treating employees like furniture. Nonetheless, we’re losing a lot of information that, unlike ma

Want to See what ChatGPT Has to Say About You? How ChatGPT Gets It Wrong

Image
Have you wondered what ChatGPT might say about you if you want to write up a bio or cv?  Can you same time by letting AI write up your bio?         One author of multiple books and films, Gini Graham Scott tried to do just that by asking ChatGPT to write a bio of her and after generating her bio five times, discovered that ChatGPT is definitely not ready for Prime Time.  Each time, it made multiple mistakes and FAILED the accuracy test.        The only thing that ChatGPT got right was the opening statement in each bio which featured some variations. For example, in Version 1 it described Scott as "an accomplished American author, filmmaker, and sociologist who has published over 50 books in various genres, including self-help, business, and crime fiction. In Version 2 it described her as "a prolific author, filmmaker, and consultant who has written and published over 200 books, both fiction and non-fiction, covering a wide range of topics, including business, self-h

Standing Tall From Summit Consulting Group, Inc. -- Alan Weiss, Ph.D.

For Immediate Release: Dateline: East Greenwich , RI On most sports shows today, there is a woman included in the group (when there are just two people, one is usually a woman). I find almost all of these women extremely well prepared and interesting in their analyses. More often than not, they are the facilitator with a group of men, usually former players or coaches. Why is it, I wonder innocently, that the men’s fashion today is, even with suits, to wear comfortable athletic shoes/sneakers, with think rubber soles and canvas or soft leather tops, and the women are staggering around in quite obviously uncomfortable stilettos? Why is it that the men can dress comfortably (they don’t always wear jackets and ties) but the women almost always wear dresses, usually short ones or with slits up the side? Is this really “inclusion” or is it sort of highly customized inclusion?! (The dreadful, unnecessary football role of “sideline reporter” that women had been relegated to fill now som

Did You Miss Your Exit?

Image
CEOs who aspire to spectacular growth have expectations of nothing short of exceptional results from their leaders. They rally these leaders with optimistic views of the future and eyes on the rewards that will be given for achieving KPIs and other metrics. Strong leaders take the nod and push their departments forward with similar focus. The drive for growth is pushed down through the organization where outstanding results are expected consistently. While many top performing companies experience this, leaders need to be mindful that sometimes people are driving so fast and furiously that they miss their turn off. As a result, they metaphorically need to get off the freeway and must backtrack to where they missed their exit. What causes this to happen? It can be a wide range of issues, however, here are three of the top ones to keep your eyes on. + Success metrics that don’t fit all departments. Although it’s important that all departments set success metrics, sometimes these nee

Top of Mind Thursday ? February 23, 2023: An Anniversary No One Is Celebrating

Image
For Immediate Release: Dateline: San Francisco , CA Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of Russian troops invading Ukraine in an effort to re-integrate the country into Mother Russia. No one expected things would go the way they have. Not Vladamir Putin, who thought the conflict would last a few days or weeks at most. Not the US or NATO. Not even the Ukrainians, who likely underestimated their own ability to persevere under the leadership of President Zelenskyy. No one expected the conflict to cause worldwide disruptions in grain supply from Ukraine, or gas and oil pumped from Russia to Europe. Nor did we expect the global inflation that resulted from these disruptions. Certainly, Putin never expected his actions would unite the Western World in a way we haven’t seen since World War II. Not only have the NATO nations strengthened their resolve, but Sweden and Finland have asked to join the alliance–as has Ukraine. Through the bombings and the artillery attacks, the Ukraini
