Good Authoring Day to YOU … … And Happy Saturday to you! The Top Ten Twitter Blog started eight years ago. Today, it will be retired—time for something new. I’ve shared over 4,000 tips during that time with links to more info; how-to; and insights during the time. Next week, my new weekly Saturday blog will debut, replacing the Twitter one. My promise … it will be:. Short. Insightful. Sometimes inspiration. Sometimes get off your tush push … welcome to: Dr. Judith’s Saturday Blog: Be a Doer … Not a Dreamer .   It’s New Year’s Eve around the world. In my household, it’s a quiet time. We don’t go out. Working in the ER—too many accidents that convinced that there “was nothing like home—stay put” and I have done so since unless I can walk to a neighbor’s home. Jazzed to learn that the local B&N is ordering in my new book, The Secret Journey co-authored with Brian Barnes. Sailing into the light of a healthier and more humane?planet

Image
The tall ship, Tecla, a Dutch North Sea sailing herring dragger built in 1915, was tied by three heavy hawser lines to the ferry quay in Ullapool, Northwest Scotland, a town of white-washed buildings packed together for the herring fishery. Most of us had arrived the evening before and we were ready to sail except for obtaining one more official document. The health certificate is not very important to European nations but is required to land in Argentina, Chile, and other ports along the voyage around the Americas. Next year, Tecla was scheduled to return to the Atlantic by way of the Northwest Passage. The health inspector arrived from Inverness early in the afternoon. After inspecting every room, he issued the certificate. The Harbormaster in bright yellow storm jacket stood on the pier. He called us “lucky bastards” to be sailing to the Canary Islands in September. Our female captain gave the Harbormaster a hug and climbed down the iron latter. She started up the big diesel engine

A Cast of Less than A Thousand

Image
For Immediate Release: Dateline: East Greenwich , RI We went to an elegant restaurant last night in Newport. The website told us that there were no reservations available, but I know someone and we were able to get in. The first surprise was that there was no valet. Second, no hostess. A server was doubling as hostess and taking care of the largest of the two dining areas. Only five tables were occupied during our dinner, which leads me to believe that the reservations were limited because there was insufficient staff to service the entire place . The food  and the lone server were excellent. The chef and manager came out to say hello and ask about our experience. (I thought the manager ought to have been hustling food himself!) There ARE staffing problems, and they are a management responsibility. They can be resolved with innovation and determination. How do I know? Because a hell of a lot of restaurants are fully staffed. So, what’s the distinction? Adblock test (Why?) so

Come On, Man: Southwest Air

Image
For Immediate Release: Dateline: East Greenwich , RI What Herb Kelleher had brilliantly created has come apart at the seams. The aerodynamics of the company don’t work anymore. But, what do you expect from a CEO who’s making a paltry $3 million Would you believe that Southwest crew members have to get their scheduling assignments over an antiquated phone system that had an eight-hour wait? I am not making that up unless the Wall Street Journal is lying. While planes sat idle for lack of a crew, crews sat idle for lack of modern computer links. Southwest uses a routing system not unlike a Greyhound bus— from point to point to point, eschewing the more contemporary hub-and-spoke method. If the bus is late after one stop, it will be late for all stops because it can’t (legally) make up the lost time. Nor can the plane, for aeronautical reasons. A 737 is not supersonic. An airline that once had no frills now has no friends. The carefree attitude of maneuvering to avoid a middle se

The Quiet Week From Nancy Boyd -- Bright Wings Inc.

Image
For Immediate Release: Dateline: Briarcliff Manor , NY The week between Christmas and New Years is a Quiet Week ~ but it holds magnificent power if you know how to use it. The Quiet Week Most years I follow a faithful ritual.  I use the Quiet Week to rest, reflect and prepare for the coming New Year. Over the years, there have been many different ways I’ve approached this, yet each one has served me well in making a shift from What Was to What Will Become . And that shift is critical, because without it, every day is the same as the one before, in an endless procession of things to do and achieve (aka BORING.) This year, I’m pulling back the curtain in full transparency, to reveal what my path has been in 2022, what worked and what didn’t, and what conclusions I drew from that information; what I’ve been considering in the coming cycles; and how I choose which options to pursue with everything I have. Here’s I should insert a little gem that I’ve learned over several deca
