While students are excited about graduating, the excitement often dims with the realization of little recognition in the corporate world, particularly those who don’t fit the ‘traditional mold.’ To advance to the point of finding reward in one’s endeavors, it’s critical to learn from every error, person, conflict, and most of all, our thinking and what might need to change. However, it’s also critical to be resolute in embracing one’s ethical standards and desires and to do everything possible to transform professional growth in our favor.
Early in one’s career, many face the need to take a job they dislike while paying for necessities. It is not an easy role to undertake. Still, by reminding oneself daily of our purpose and the desires ahead, we can be motivated to learn all the lessons before us to advance into a much preferable role. There are always ‘workarounds’ on the job if we are willing to defy the words, ‘You must do…’ or ‘You can’t…’ However, it’s critical not to violate any legal standing. When faced with a concerning moment, it’s best to ask questions about the thinking behind the command. An in-depth conversation is more likely to find a suitable answer, but ensure you conduct it without anger in your voice. Smile as you focus on the fact that your unique idea can transform professional growth.
On another level, one needs to have a ‘backup escape route’ to not lose sight of why we exist. Our mentality affects life in many areas, and it’s vital to maintain a positive mindset in all aspects of life, including encouraging others to persevere. My escape route after enduring a yearly miserable job experience was to travel to another country; the desire was to learn from other cultures, with the hope of improving my career through newly acquired ambitions.
Seek Out Commonalities
Obviously, in some positions, we uncover no commonalities; however, most of the time, it’s possible to realize the potential of working for or with another person or company. This morning, I received a surprise message from Employ Africa. Their purpose is, ‘Dedicated to empowering businesses in Africa and beyond.’ And their message motivated me to read and share their article, ‘Why Africa Remains A Land of Opportunity for Global Business.’ A smile and fond memory overcame me. Long ago, we had the opportunity to take a photographer’s safari in Africa, visiting Kenya and Tanzania, which was the most memorable trip of all, reminiscing about the exquisite wildlife running in herds on the plains. On another level, my remembrance helped me land a job long ago as I fascinated the recruiter with my story.
Genuine Stories Sell
As you strive to advance your career or business, it’s the unique and sincere stories that ‘sell’ your purpose to encourage an agreement. The reason is that when we share our experiences, the genuineness of our voice and the words we communicate are more likely to be well-received. People listen and often share their relatable experiences as well.

Ultimately, we transform our professional growth and ideals to feel a sense of satisfaction and the desire to help others create the foundation for their ambition, too.
