Your Actions Speak Loudly

Image
Recently, I received a call from a 90-year-old woman who said, “I bought Chicken Soup for the Soul when it first came out. My children and grandchildren still read it. I wanted you to know that three generations like your story.” Like many of the stories that Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield collected from their friends, these were profound in their simplicity. My short, simple story was told to me decades ago while jogging with my friend Bobby Lewis in Oklahoma City. I would list it under Honesty, Ethics, and Parenting. My friend and proud father, Bobby Lewis, took his two little boys to play miniature golf. He asked the attendant, “How much is it to get in?” He replied, “It’s three dollars for you and any kid over six. They get in free if they’re six or younger.” Bobby said, “Well, Mikey’s three and Jimmy’s seven, so I owe you $6.00.” The attendant looked surprised. “Hey, mister, do you like throwing your money away? You could have told me the big one was only six and saved ...

Cost of Procrastination Starting Retirement Savings Early

Image
Retirement may seem like a distant milestone, especially when you’re young, but the decisions you make today will shape your financial future. One of the biggest financial mistakes people make is procrastinating on retirement savings. The longer you wait to start saving, the harder it becomes to reach financial security—and the more you’ll have to sacrifice later in life. According to a study by the Stanford Center on Longevity , many people underestimate how much they will need for retirement and delay saving, often leading to financial stress in later years. The power of compound interest makes early saving crucial: starting even a decade earlier can result in hundreds of thousands of extra dollars by retirement. Compound interest is often called the eighth wonder of the world for a reason. It allows your savings to grow exponentially over time. According to a study by the National Bureau of Economic Research , investors who start saving for retirement in their 20s accumulate si...

Jean-etic Testing

Image
Let’s discuss denim for a moment. As many of you know, I was a merchant for the bulk of my retail career. And, during those days, I bought a ton of denim for my stores – Levi’s, Seven For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, True Religion and so on. I also assorted denim for Lauren across UK and Europe. When it comes to executing on merchandising strategy, denim poses some unique (and not so obvious) challenges. These include: Jeans have numerous size variations including inseam and length. There is inconsistency across brands on where to show size and fit information. Either it’s a size label on the back of a waistband or on the front leg with a sticker. This makes it difficult to plan how to display multiple brands together. Some denim styles are rigid and too structured. S hooks can help show the drape of the denim but a rigid non-stretch jean could look too stiff. Broken sizing is common in denim because every style of jeans fits differently. This can be tremendously difficult...

Image
For Immediate Release: Dateline: Philadelphia , PA The Origin of the Obama Bomb: Trump's Spreading the Bogus "Birther" Brouhaha.   Foryears Donald Trump mischievously pounded into voters' heads that BarackObama  was born in Kenya — not in the U.S. — and therefore ineligible to be president in violation of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. Worse, he might even be a dreaded Muslim. A sampling of the Donald's "birther" rhetoric:   "He[Obama] doesn't have a birth certificate, or if he does, there's something on that certificate that is very bad for him. Now, somebody told me - and I have no idea if this is bad for him or not, but perhaps it would be - that where it says 'religion,' it might have 'Muslim.' Andif you're a Muslim, you don't change your religion, by the way." —Donald Trump, The Laura Ingraham Show , March 30, 2011.     Barack Plays Hardball. PresidentObama's extraordinary retribu...
