Top of Mind Thursday ? February 27, 2025: Three Long Years

Image
For Immediate Release: Dateline: San Francisco , CA This week was the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the time, the expectation was this conflict would be over quickly—maybe in a few days, or at least a week or two. But the Ukrainians rallied around President Vlodymyr Zelensky, fought back, and surprisingly held off the Russians—even making advances into Russian territory. They were only able to do this with the financial and materiel support of Western nations, including the US and several other NATO countries. Both sides have endured significant losses, with estimates of 50,000 Ukrainian deaths and up to 200,000 Russians. While Russia has lost more soldiers in this war than in any previous conflict, they also have many more resources available, and they’ve even recruited North Koreans to fight for them. Meanwhile, the US appetite for supporting this effort has dissipated with the current administration. Trump has previously built a strong relationship...

Dr. Keith Baar, UC Davis ? Simple Exercises That Can Repair Tendons (Tennis Elbow, etc.), Collagen Fact vs. Fiction, Isometrics vs. Eccentrics, JAK Inhibitors, Growth Hormone vs. IGF-1, The Anti-RICE Protocol, and How to Use Load as an Anti-Inflammat

Image
For Immediate Release: Dateline: San Francisco , CA Dr. Keith Baar is a Professor at the University of California, Davis in the Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology. During his Ph.D. studies, his research revealed that mechanical strain on muscle fibers activates the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway, a crucial regulator of muscular hypertrophy.  Subsequently, he studied the molecular dynamics of skeletal muscle adaptation to endurance training under the guidance of Dr. John Holloszy , a legend in the field of exercise physiology, considered the father of modern exercise biochemistry . Building on all of this experience, he conducted research into tendon health and the potential for engineering ligaments, which could have implications for treatment and recovery from injuries. Dr. Baar now runs the Functional Molecular Biology Lab at UC Davis. His lab’s work ranges from studying molecular changes in our cells to conducting studies to effect rea...

Are You in Control?

Image
For Immediate Release: Dateline: East Greenwich , RI I can now create charts and diagrams and drawings using AI, as can you. That will jeopardize some artists and software companies. CPAs and tax work seem very susceptible to me, as do air traffic controllers and actuaries. No one, no university, no professional license, promised you a safe, lifetime job. Without delving into the politics of it, the current government reductions are creating the same issues. If you’re not working for yourself, you don’t have a sinecure. Technology, competition, social mores (DEI turmoil), government regulations can all undermine you or even put you out on the street. Take control of your life. Have a Plan B and a Plan C. Never rely on someone else to take care of you, rely on yourself. Take a look around your workplace. What happens if it disappears? You may not think that’s likely, but it’s probably more likely than it has been since the “digital revolution” and before that the “industrial revo...

Store Spotlight: Laline at Toronto Eaton Centre

Image
Over the weekend, I took to the snow covered streets of Toronto and made my way to the Eaton Centre. My intention was to review Saks but I was pleasantly surprised to find myself in Laline for the first time. I wanted to shine the spotlight on this store because the experience was excellent. Windows The visually merchandised windows caught my interest and pulled me into the store. Against a back wall of textured flowers, I noticed a bathtub full of bath & body products, loofahs, and exfoliators. The window looked like I was about to enter a spa or an art gallery. There was also the most beautiful scent flowing through the front door. Naturally, I followed my nose. Overall Design & Aesthetic The front display was not only enticing with delightful products but there was clear signage with promotions displayed. The product mix was segmented into categories and props helped to elevate the product. Every space was filled with gift boxes, telling the customer this was the sto...

When Denial Risks Families: Facing the Reality of Long-Term Care

Image
Susan never imagined she would find herself bathing and dressing her husband, Mark, after his stroke at 68. He had always been the strong one—the provider, the planner. "We'll never need help," he used to say. "If something happens, we'll figure it out." However, as Mark's mobility declined, Susan quickly realized she wasn't prepared for the physical and emotional toll of caregiving. Their savings once meant for travel and a comfortable retirement, were now being drained by home health aides. Their adult children, juggling their own careers and families, could only do so much. "I wish we had planned ahead," Susan admits. "But Mark was always so sure we wouldn't need to." Ignoring Reality Denial can be a powerful force, especially when it comes to aging and long-term care. For many families, the refusal to acknowledge future care needs leads to financial hardship, stress, and difficult decisions. Matt McCann , a nationall...

Going into your own business? Pay attention to these things 7 things!

Image
Thinking about going solo in business? Comedian and keynote speaker Jan McInnis has spent decades thriving in one of the toughest industries—comedy, entertainment, and speaking. While she's not a household name, she has built a successful, full-time career and is now sharing the hard-earned lessons she wishes she had known from the start. "These insights apply to ANY business," says McInnis. "Whether you're in technology or tourism, you should pay attention to these 7 things." Here are 7 crucial lessons every aspiring business owner should take to heart: 1. Never. Stop. Marketing. Marketing should be your top priority —in both time and budget. McInnis learned this the hard way. In 2008, she booked 44 events with one client  - plus many other gigs— so she didn't have to market that year. When the recession hit, she had to start from scratch, cold. It was TOUGH. Never hand over full control of the wheel. 2. Invest in the Right Tools—No Matter ...
