How Jimmy Fallon Selects Books for The Tonight Show?s Book Club

Image
By Scott Lorenz Westwind Book Marketing How can you get free promotion for your book? The answer is simple: have people connect over your book and talk about it. That’s why book clubs are such an effective tool for authors. Book club members go out and buy your book, read it, meet up to talk about it, and then recommend it to their friends. It’s good old fashioned ‘word-of-mouth’ marketing every book needs. You can learn about this approach to promoting your book in a more extensive article I wrote about it here: book clubs . There’s one book club with a huge national following and it was started by Jimmy Fallon of the Tonight Show. About the Fallon Book Club Segment Jimmy Fallon hosts a book club segment where he and his viewers choose a book to read together. Jimmy starts by giving the audience their options. The choices range from debut novels to New York Times Best Sellers, with genres ranging from love stories to murder mysteries. In 2018 when Jimmy started the segment, it

Kids? Attitudes Toward Others Poisoned by One Bad Bit of Gossip

Image
Gossip influences everyone, but when it comes to kids, the effect can be devastating for some. Photo by Vitolda Klein on Unsplash Gossip is the human grapevine for honest or skewed information to poison people against someone or something. For kids, it can be particularly devastating, and this is where t he seeds of empathy, understanding, and critical thinking must be sewn to enable children to question gossip. One study used single and multiple sources of information to test how children may use gossip and whether positive or negative gossip is accepted. Because of the number of sources, gossip may be true if several informants convey the same reputational information about others, implying that a social group agrees on their morality . Researchers studied whether 7-year-olds would trust numerous independent gossip sources. They got positive/negative reputational information. The 7-year-olds relied on favorable gossip from numerous sources, more than one. But, regardless

The Cloudy Eyes Have It: Major Depression And Cataracts

Image
Cataracts are a common physical condition as we age, and along with this decrease in vision can come significant mental health changes. zorgens @123RF Cataracts are one of the most common reasons people lose sight worldwide, even though they can usually be corrected . This vision disorder, which can make people’s lives less enjoyable, is still one of the major eye health issues in both developed and developing countries, and it is the primary reason people go blind. Thirty-six million people around the world are blind, and more than 12 million of them are blind because of cataracts. According to estimates, the production cost to businesses worldwide is $411 billion yearly. It’s important to note that some genes and environmental factors , like smoking cigarettes, being exposed to UV light , and having certain diseases like diabetes, uveitis, IOP-lowering drugs or surgery, trauma, steroid use , or working in certain jobs, can make it more likely someone will develop a cataract.

The Problem Is Population, Not Precipitation

Image
For Immediate Release: Dateline: East Greenwich , RI Climate change has become de rigueur in every conversation these days. If it snows too much, or too little, or even on average, it’s due to climate change. I tell people that one of my car’s tires lost air and it was due to climate change, and only half of them laugh while the others grimly nod. But there’s a far more immediate issue in developed countries, and it’s the fact that we’re not replacing ourselves. Morbidity is outstripping fertility and labor forces are shrinking. Traditionally, countries with large labor forces developed more quickly and gained economic strength, irrespective of politics. That dynamic applied to China as well as the US, and the population declines will, as well. In the next seven years or so, there will be more people over 65 in the US than there will be children. That is unprecedented (https://www.census.gov/content/dam/Census/library/publications/2020/demo/p25-1144.pdf). What this means is t
