Update on Juneteenth Holiday

Image
November 30, 2021 Update on Juneteenth Holiday President Biden signed into law the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act on June 17, 2021, making June 19 a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. However, the law did not apply to the Postal Service. NALC is aware of an internal Postal Service communication indicating that the holiday will be observed beginning in 2022 for full-time and part-time career employees. We have had informal discussions about the Juneteenth holiday with the Postal Service and will continue to discuss additional issues related to the observance of this holiday for all city letter carriers. The 2022 Subaru BRZ presents a solid sports car value

Image
For 2022, Subaru has made some welcomed changes to its BRZ. This includes more power, better exterior design as well as some inside. It competes directly with the Mazda MX-5, Toyota 86 and Mini Cooper.  Its engine is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine co-developed by Toyota. It’s good for 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. That’s a significant improvement over the previous year.  There’s only a six-speed automatic transmission available and no manual at this time. You’ll be rewarded with some nice exhaust notes and some decent performance with a 0-60 time in about 6 seconds. It’s a lightweight sports car that tips the scales at only 2,800 pounds. There’s a limited-slip differential that does a great job of putting down the power.  Our limited edition upgrades the wheels from the standard 17-inch to a better-looking 18-inch wheel. It’s a very light and well-balanced car that will beckon its driver to push it hard and fast on curvy roads. Sure it’s not super fast in a straight

Is China Over-Reacting to Covid?

Image
Covid is a global concern. Yet, China’s over powering reaction to seemingly small outbreaks seems excessive, particularly its impact on Chinese exports of toys and consumer products. Indeed, everyone’s antennas are up again due to the rise of the Omicron variant. China’s strong response to Covid, however, long predates Omicron. Visitors to Hong Kong and China still must spend two weeks in quarantine , long after the rest of the world discontinued the practice. Two weeks ago, authorities shut down Hong Kong and Shanghai Disneyland due to one individual at each park testing for Covid. The Chinese government is the majority owner of both theme parks. The Shanghai shutdown trapped 34,000 people in the park for hours. All had to be tested before leaving. Things are not going any more smoothly for those who ship products out of China’s ports. Ports have been shut in China over recent months due to Covid’s occurrence in a relatively small number of workers. Consider this August 13, 202

Books for Writers, 2021 Edition

Image
For Immediate Release: Dateline: San Luis Obispo , CA You don’t need to know someone’s size, allergies, or living situation to send them a book. A book encapsulates a few hours of time spent with a thoughtful author. What a gift! Every December I share a list of books for writers and authors, plucked from the many books I finished that year. This list reflects a year of eclectic reading. (This is a small subset of the books I’ve enjoyed this year.) Maybe you can find something for those difficult-to-please folks on your gift list. (Note: Most of the links in this post are affiliate links to BookShop. You can find all of the titles on Amazon as well without much effort. Bookshop supports indie bookstores, and affiliate fees help support my serious book buying problem.) Books for writers How to Write One Song by Jeff Tweedy. You don’t have to know Tweedy’s music to appreciate his take on creativity. This book would be fabulous for anyone who is curious about song-writing.

Do You Treat Employees As Clients?

Image
Photo by Mimi Thian via Unsplash Attract The Right Job Or Clientele:  It was always curious as to why management from the top down does not treat employees as clients. Consider the fact that although employees receive a salary versus clients who pay the company, the business is highly dependent upon both components; that of employees and clients! The topic arises as the news is non-stop, providing statistics about high employee turnover and the difficulties with finding people who want to work in the office as most opt for remote work. Upon asking one person new to management how he adapts to creating a desirable work environment with the hybrid workplace, his answer prompts today’s blog title and insights. My Story The theme for the Smooth Sale implies earning a returning and referring clientele. Top sales producers focus on the one word, ‘earn.’ Attempting to talk someone into a sale or convince them there will never be a better time to purchase typically does not play out well

Fact-Check: Munchkin?s Claim that Asian Female ==> +$1 Million

Image
Last time, we discussed the value of being female for an AP. Since female skill will tend to be underestimated by predominantly male casino bosses, females can be ringers at the game. Unfortunately for the female AP, that benefit is tempered by the increased visibility and memorability that they’ll have. But Munchkin’s statement was that being an “Asian female” would be worth an extra $1 million for an AP’s career. So let’s look at Asian-ness in the gambling world. For my readers who are not Asian-American, I think you’ll never quite appreciate the role of gambling in Asian culture compared to the US, unless you travel widely and spend a lot of time in casinos around the world. If you think that Vegas is the capital of the gambling world, well, you really need to see Macau . Asians love to gamble. This isn’t a genetic or racial issue; it’s quite obvious from going to casinos that people of all races, genders, ages, and nations love to gamble. Humans love to gamble (and there’s an evo

Long COVID, and How HBOT Can Help Relieve It

Image
As the pandemic continues its deadly march, various sectors continue to be affected, and the nation’s veterans are among them. According to the  Department of Veterans Affairs , the number of COVID cases among veterans exceeded 340,000 at the end of last September — and these are just the numbers from official VA-run hospitals, clinics, and medical centers. Yet although vaccines are causing recovery rates to rise, more than half of COVID survivors feel the effects of the virus long after it leaves their bodies. Here, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can step in to help veterans regain full health. Here’s what we currently know about HBOT treatments for long COVID, in particular. What is long COVID? Long COVID syndrome (LCOV) occurs when a COVID survivor continues to experience symptoms of the disease for more than 12 weeks, and these symptoms can’t be traced to another cause. According to health resource  SymptomFind , these symptoms include fatigue, brain fog, dizziness and headac
