Not down for the count, the scruffy little guy with spots is back from the brink of extinction.

Image
The little, spotted kiwi – known locally as kiwi pukupuku – has been discovered in the wild on New Zealand’s South Island for the first time in 50 years! The iconic kiwi bird – so famous that New Zealanders themselves are known colloquially as “kiwis” – is a flightless bird distinguished by their unusually narrow, pointed, needle-like beak. Kiwis lack the sleek, stiff feathers of flying birds, having settled for life on the ground. Kiwi feathers are hair-like and shaggy, providing camouflage and warmth during cold periods. The kiwi is the only bird in the world with nostrils at the end of its beak. Its stiffest feathers are on its face, which act like the whiskers on a cat. As the smallest of the flightless kiwi species, their size has made them extremely vulnerable to New Zealand’s introduced predators: stoats, ermines, feral cats, rats, weasels, and possums. The kiwi pukupuku was once thought to be extinct in the wild on mainland New Zealand and was relegated to islands and protec...

What Hollywood Teaches Us: 7 Ways to Become a Speaking Star

Image
To become a better speaker, consider going to the movies. That is the premise of my popular presentation, How to Add Hollywood to Your Presentations. Think about it. If you had unlimited resources to design the keynote that would make you the most in-demand professional in your industry, where would you go for the best writers, directors, and production talent? Hollywood. In Hollywood, hundreds of creative professionals collaborate to produce one unforgettable movie. Most of us cannot hire that dream team; however, we can borrow their techniques. Here are seven proven Hollywood strategies you can use to make your presentations more compelling, more memorable, and more persuasive. Open with a Flavor Scene In screenwriting, if the first three pages of a script do not grab attention, producers never read the rest. The same applies to your presentations. The first 30 seconds either win or lose your audience. Open with what David Freeman calls the “flavor scene.” It might be a stor...

Charlie Kirk Was Divisive And This Is Why I Say This

Image
Joyce L. Shafer Immediately after Charlie Kirk was assassinated, certain people claimed he was divisive. I, like many others, took great offense. A few days later, I began to read Avi Snyder’s book, Never Ashamed: Stories of Sharing Faith with Scoffers and Skeptics. One section in his book had me sit up straight and say aloud, “Yes, Lord. Charlie Kirk was, indeed, divisive.” The section subtitle is The Fruit of Biblical Division. We know the Word tells us “the Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, self control (Galatians 5:22-23 CJB).” Avi Snyder wrote, “Yes, God uses His Word to save. But He also uses His Word to divide. In fact, division is one of the primary fruits of proclamation. That’s why Yeshua said, “I did not come to bring peace, but a sword” (Matthew 10:34). He’s not talking about a physical sword, of course. The sword that He mentions is the sword of taking sides, either for Him or against Him.” If you ever thoug...

Material Aura Farming

Image
I’m experiencing a kind of material déjà vu. Here’s what I mean. Natural Fiber Welding (NFW), a next-gen material company is winding down operations. This after restructurings, leadership churn, and a stopgap $23.6M raise. And also despite marquee brand investors like Allbirds and Ralph Lauren. I say déjà vu because it doesn’t feel that far removed from when we learned about Renewcell meeting a similar fate. That happened despite similar hype and fanfare as with NFW. I think there are two things that need to be mentioned here: The first is that next-gen material activity seems like, as the kids would say, aura farming. In case this is the first time you have heard the term, aura farming is a cheeky expression for harvesting a reputational halo without actually doing anything substantial. The term applies nicely in the context of next-gen materials. Next-gen startups tout their investments from brands and win in the court of public option as they can talk about being sustainable...

How to Make Back to School Delicious and Save Money

Image
copyright 2025 Art of Living Prima Media Inc/ Maria Liberati Editor: Eryn Nichols This week on The Maria Liberati Show, Maria continued her back-to-school series with money-saving tips for packing school lunches. That got me wondering. What do school lunches actually look like across the U.S.? In such a big country with different crops, regional tastes, and cultural influences, school lunch menus can vary widely. Let’s take a closer look at some of the variety offered by different states. School lunches in the U.S. are largely overseen by each state’s school board, but the federal government has long played a role. The National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry S. Truman in 1946, ensured that children could receive lunch at a lower cost, or even for free. It was a step toward reducing childhood hunger, though the meals themselves weren’t always nutritious. Fast forward to 2010, when  the USDA introduced the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. This legislation set ...

The Hidden Power of Ritual: Why Your Morning Coffee Matters More Than You Think

Image
How the simple acts we perform every day can transform our lives in ways we never imagined. Photo by Manyu Varma on Unsplash Your morning activities are vital parts of your daily routine. After waking up, your first action is often grabbing your phone or rushing to the kitchen to start the coffee machine. Before your day begins, consider incorporating stretching, prayer, and brief moments of silence into your routine. These everyday activities, which seem ordinary, actually serve as rituals of greater significance. Research indicates that daily rituals are essential tools that help individuals find happiness, maintain their health, and foster stronger relationships. Although we may bristle against regimentation, these simple procedures provide us with structure, confidence, and calm, so don’t dismiss them. While we’re at it, let’s think about these small rituals that you perform every day and how it is viewed by others. Have you ever been told that you are obsessive-compulsive...

Image
SUMMARY BY CHATGPT Main Idea The episode warns against using social logins (e.g., “Sign in with Facebook/Google”) because while they’re convenient, they create serious security and privacy risks. ________________________________________ Key Points • Guest: Larry Guerrera (Tom’s tech expert and podcast editor). • Topic: Pros and cons of social logins.
